Sim Dual

What exactly is a dual sim adapter?

I have a Sony Ericssion K610 company phone, but also have a personal contract sim card that I use in this phone by switching off and changing sim. I have heard about dual sim card adapters but havent a clue how they work.
Can I receive calls on both numbers? [...]
